“This freedom has allowed for my fulfilment and the benefit of others.”
Childfree Story: Betsy, 70, Canada

“I’m 70. I suddenly realised one day, at age 13, that I would never have children. It was a sort of epiphany - I understood that there was something else I needed to do with my life and that it would take all my time and energy.
I had a wonderful family and was always encouraged to follow my dreams. I was repeatedly told by my parents and aunts that I would accomplish great things, and that I’d have a career that would benefit the world. I didn’t think much about what they said, but their words certainly supported my self-confidence and sense of independence. There was never pressure to have children - in all my life not one person suggested that I should consider having a family. So I was very lucky in that respect.
I did all sorts of things in my 20s as I tried to find my way. I went back to university in my early 30s and in the end got a PhD in an area I was - and still am - passionate about. I taught at universities around the world for 25 years and continue to do my research even today (I have 3 books to finish!). Yes, I had a few relationships but my partners didn’t want children either.
I am so happy I followed my heart. I’ve never regretted not having children, am in fact very glad I didn’t. I’ve always loved my freedom, and it’s this freedom that’s allowed for my fulfilment and the benefit of others.”

I so love hearing from those in the later stages in life. It really does challenge that ubiquitous threat so many of us hear that we will regret our choices later on.
This post made me exhale and smile. It gives so much relief and joy to think about what I can age into as a childfree woman. Thank you for sharing these stories.
